Team Overview:

North Carolina absolutely dominated the Badgers last night. They did so inside. North Carolina established their two big men early and often on the offensive end. Both Meeks and Hicks have developed offensive games. They can score in the post, and step outside. Hick's turnaround jumper (a shot Meeks made as well) is particularly dangerous. Meeks was also a beast on the boards. He grabbed 16 of them. Wisconsin can be very effective on the offensive boards—the game before against Georgetown, Wisconsin had 20 of them—with Ethan Happ and Nigel Hayes, but Meeks single-handedly shut them down. 13 of his 16 rebounds came off the defensive glass, denying Wisconsin of those offensive rebounds, and second chance opportunities—and boy, could they have used those second chance points. Meeks finished the game with 15 points on 6-9 shooting, 16 rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and two assists. He also stayed out of foul trouble, allowing him to play 31 minutes this game. More of Meeks will always be a good thing for North Carolina; he's averaging just over 23 minutes played this season. Hicks, Meeks' partner down low, had 14 points on 6-10 shooting and five rebounds. That's about what his average has been this season; Hicks is averaging 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Joel Berry II has developed into a great leader for the Tarheels. He is an incredibly efficient scorer, shooting 9-12 from the field against the Badgers, and making two of his three 3pt attempts. He scored 22 points. Berry is averaging 17.4 ppg thus far this year, while shooting an outstanding, especially for a guard, 55.9% from the field, and 47.1% from deep. Berry has developed into an excellent shooter. Berry also had three assists. Kenny Williams has seen an increase in his playing time this year. He's averaging 20.9 minutes/game compared to just 4.4 his freshman season. However, he is still struggling to get involved on offense, averaging just 5.6 ppg. Williams has been shooting at a high percentage; he just does not get many looks as UNC's fifth scoring option. Justin Jackson has been performing well thus far this season, averaging 15.4 ppg, while shooting 47% from the floor. He scored in double digits this game, but was just 4-13 from the field, and made just one of his six attempts beyond the arc. Jackson struggled mightily in the first half especially, before turning it around in the second half. He constantly faced a mismatch on defense, and took advantage by taking the ball inside on the drive. He is much more effective doing this, then trying to be a jump shooter.

North Carolina just got eight points from their bench, and only two players: Bradley and Britt, played from than 10 minutes. Bradley looks very promising. He, like Hicks, is capable of scoring inside and out, and looks like he will be a good rebounder too. He finished with six points, and three rebounds. Britt really struggled against Wisconsin. He missed all five of his shots, and turned the ball over twice. North Carolina will be better when Theo Pinson's multi-faceted game returns, and Britt is back to playing less than 20 minutes/game.

North Carolina stomped on a tough Wisconsin team. They even did so playing a slower tempo game than they're used to. The Tarheels can be very dominate with their two interior players, especially on the offensive end. They also out-rebounded a good rebounding team. North Carolina still is not a great shooting team, they shot just 25% from 3pt range. However, Berry has grown into a complete point guard, who sets the tempo for the team, and can shoot with anyone.

Team Overview:

Wisconsin looked terrible against the Tarheels. They shot just 38.2% from the field. They were also out-rebounded 26:38, and limited to just four offensive rebounds, a game after they grabbed 20 on that end.

Forwards, Vitto Brown and Ethan Happ, were the two bright spots for the team this game. Brown was one of the few players on the team showing any ability to shoot the ball. He finished the game with 15 points, shooting 5-6 from the field, and 4-5 from beyond the arc. Brown is averaging just 7.8 ppg, but is a very efficient scorer. He is shooting 58.1% from the field, and 52.6% from three. Brown needs to be taking more shots. Happ did not match his totals against Georgetown, which were 19 points and 15 rebounds. However, he still had a good game, trying to help the team any way possible. Happ has no quit in him, and gives 100% of effort every play. Happ finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks.

Wisconsin's two star seniors, Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig, really struggled this game. Hayes scored eight points on 3-11 shooting, including missing all but one of his seven 3pt attempts. Hayes had difficulty finding his rhythm on offense, and too often settled for contested jump shots. It was not pretty. Koenig scored just two points, coming off the Georgetown game where he scored 20. The senior point guard was just 1-13 from the field, and missed all of his five attempts from behind the arc. He had no answer for the Tarheels, and Joel Berry II, on either end of the floor. Koenig also turned the ball over three times.

 No other Badger took more than four shots this game. The only player to make an impact off the bench was freshman, D'Mitrik Trice. Trice looked unfazed by the deficit in the second half, and looked to take advantage of the playing time. He ended the game with eight points, making both of his field goal attempts. It will be interesting to see if Trice is eventually rewarded with more minutes, considering Zak Showalter has been ineffective thus far this season as a starter.

Wisconsin Badgers

F Ethan Happ: 9

The Badgers' frontcourt played really well against Syracuse. Ethan Happ had a breakout performance. He scored a season high 18 points. Grabbed a season high 15 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, and blocked a season high three blocks. Ethan Happ outworked Syracuse's bigs, Lydon and Roberson. He does not have a ton of offensive upside. He has trouble finishing in traffic, and his jumper is inconsistent at best. However, he played really well this game, and did a great job defending Tyler Lydon, as he is athletic enough to guard him out on the perimeter as well as inside.

F Nigel Hayes: 8

Nigel Hayes is the key for this Wisconsin team. He has a great combination of size, 6-8 245lbs, and athleticism. He has not shot well this year, 36% from the field this season, and just 27.3% from three. However, he does many good things for the team. This was in line with his performance against Syracuse. He made only 5 of 15 shot attempts, scoring 15 points. However, he grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished six assists. Hayes often ran the offense, playing out on the perimeter to see over the zone. This proved effective, especially in the first half when he found Vitto Brown open for jumpers. Hayes also played excellent defense on Malachi Richardson. Due to handling the ball so much at the top of the zone, Hayes did turn the ball over five times.

F Vitto Brown: 8

Vitto Brown had a great first half, scoring 11 of his 14 points in that frame. He can be an inconsistent shooter. His field goal percentage is 41.2%, and he's been shooting just 21.1% from 3pt range. However, he shot six of nine this game, and two of three from beyond the arc. More consistent performances from Brown will make Wisconsin a dangerous team. On defense, Brown gives the team a third forward 6'8 or above. He blocked three of Syracuse's shots.

G Bronson Koenig: 6

Bronson Koenig was supposed to be the next star of the Big-10. He's averaging over 15 points a game, but every time watch he's terrible. In fact, against good competition Koenig has been terrible. 16.7% shooting percentage against Georgetown, 16.7% against Oklahoma, and 33.3% against Syracuse. Koenig shot just 3-9, for 12 points. He did make some important FT down the stretch, and had six rebounds. He was also the only Wisconsin player not to turn the ball over, despite playing 42 minutes, and the team recording 20 turnovers this game.

G Zak Showalter: 6.5

Showalter is the less proficient scorer on Wisconsin's starting lineup. He scored only six points, on 3-6 shooting, missing all three of his 3pt attempts. However, he did make five assist, and grab six rebounds. He also did a nice job on defense, and drew several offensive fouls.

F Charlie Thomas: 4.5

Charlie Thomas is another body to throw into the frontcourt. He is not an asset on offense, and missed all four of his field goal attempts. He grabbed two rebounds, but was much less effective than Wisconsion's starters.

Team Rating: 7.35

Wisconsin finally picked up a signature win after losing to Georgetown and Oklahoma earlier in the season. I can see this team bouncing back this season. The frontcourt is very strong. They aren't huge with no starter taller than 6'9, but they are balanced, and both Brown and Hayes are able to shoot from outside. They are also tenacious rebounders. If the frontcourt can continue playing like this, and Koenig shoots more consistently, they will be a dangerous team going into the Big-Ten season.

Syracuse Orange

C DaJuan Coleman: N/A

DaJuan Coleman only played five minutes, and did not play in the second half. He grabbed three rebounds early in the game, and missed the only shot he took. Syracuse lose the rebounding battle 25 to 51. Yes, Wisconsin doubled Syracuse's rebound total. Syracuse was dominated inside. One of the biggest problems I have with Jim Boeheim is, he rarely makes adjustments. This game required Syracuse to make an adjustment. They were not shooting well, and Wisconsin was dominating them inside. I know Syracuse loves Tyler Lydon and Malachi Richardson, but one of them should have gone to the bench in the second half in favor of Coleman. Coleman could have helped diminish Ethan Happ's presence inside. Coleman has a big body to block out, and could have put more pressure on Wisconsin's front line. Instead Syracuse allowed Lydon and Richardson shoot a combined 1-10 from 3pt range. Nice work.

F Tyler Roberson: 4

Roberson has been extremely inconsistent on the offensive end. He shot just 3-7 for seven points this game. Syracuse is a more perimeter oriented team than they have been in recent years. However, it is important that they still have a presence in the post. Roberson is a great rebounder, but he only had two this game. If I was just given that stat, and I didn't watch the game, I would have known Syracuse lost. Roberson got into foul trouble, and fouled out in overtime. He did have three blocks, but left Vitto Brown open on his side in the first half for easy buckets as well.

F Malachi Richardson: 5.5

Malachi Richardson had one of his rougher offensive performances of the year. In fact, this was the first time he failed to score in double digits in his college career (all of seven games). He shot just 3-11 from the field, and 1-7 from 3pt range. His lack of effectiveness on offense was due to Nigel Hayes guarding him, and giving him no easy shots. Hayes was a matchup nightmare for the freshman. He is bigger than Richardson, and athletic enough to prevent Richardson from driving on him. Richardson did make an effort on the glass, and led the team in rebounding, with seven. Impressively, Richardson did not turn the ball over. So, that's progress.

G Trevor Cooney: 5.5

I usually complain about Cooney's shot selection. But, I'm not going to do that for this game. He took ten shots, made three of them, and shot 2-5 from 3pt range. I'll give Cooney 8-10 shots a game to try, and get hot. It's when he's taking 12,13, and sometimes 16, or 17 shots when I have to complain. Cooney was one of the only Syracuse players to shoot better than 50% from the FT line. He made more than half, six, or the team's total made free throws, eleven. Cooney is good on the defensive end. He's a great zone defender, and even though he did not have a steal he helped the team force 20 turnovers, and kept Wisconsin shooting only 27.8% from 3pt range.

G Michael Gbinije: 7.5

Gbinije was the one highlight on Syracuse's team this game. He is proving to be a reliable star, and that's good for Syracuse in the long run this season. Gbinije shot 7-16, and an impressive four of eight from 3pt range. He scored 19 points, which has become his season average. Gbinije also had five assists, and five steals. However, Gbinije was terrible in overtime. He shot 1-4 from the field, and missed one of two free throws. He did a terrible job managing the game in overtime, which led to Syracuse loosing. It's overtime, take the ball to the basket. Do not shoot jumpers early in the shot clock. Thanks.

F Tyler Lydon: 5

Tyler Lydon had performed admirably prior to this game. However, he looked completely overmatched against Wisconsin. Lydon has been a very efficient shooter thus far this season. He has averaged double digit points, while taking only 6.6 shots per game, and is shooting 50%. Most of his points have come easy. His 3pt attempts have come while wide open. This is because defenses need to focus on Gbinije, Cooney, and Richardson, and the players guarding Lydon are often not used to having to come out to the perimeter to contest shots. Wisconsin was ready for Lydon, and Ethan Happ did an excellent job defending him. Lydon shot just two for six, and missed all three of his 3pt attempts. He also only grabbed four rebounds, as he struggled against Wisconsin's more active forwards. Lydon still did a pretty good job on defense. He had two steals, and two blocks, and prevented easy shots under the basket. I'm still concerned about him facing bigger competition, Wisconsin's biggest player is 6'9.

G Kaleb Joseph: 7

Kaleb Joseph is qualified to be graded for just the second time this season. Joseph came in when Roberson got into foul trouble, causing Syracuse to play small with Gbinije and Richardson on the wings. Joseph actually played well, while on the court. He shot 2-5 from the field, doing a good getting to the basket. He got to the free throw line, making two of three attempts from the line. He also dished out two assists in 14 minutes. Joseph did the best job managing the game, while he was on the court, and he did not have a turnover. I was very impressed with the way he played point guard, and Syracuse would have been better served inserting him into the lineup to start overtime.

Team Rating: 5.75

This game is the answer to the question: How will Syracuse fare when their shooters aren't on? They lose to fringe top-25 teams. I actually think Syracuse is a top 20-30 team themselves, and were overrated in the latest polls. The team's frontcourt has been extremely inconsistent, at best, and will struggle against teams with good frontcourts. They need to give Coleman more of a chance, and Boeheim needs to do a better job of making changes in the lineup based on the flow of the game. Against Wisconsin, the team needed less Richardson and Cooney, and more Coleman and Joseph. But, Boeheim is going to play the way he wants regardless of the situation. I guess we'll see what Hop's got on Saturday. Georgetown is going to be a tough test. 1. They beat Wisconsin. 2. They have a good frontcourt. 3. It's a primary rivalry. 

Georgetown vs Wisconsin: Player Ratings and Recap

Here are player ratings for the first Semi-Final game of the 2k Sports Classic between Wisconsin and Georgetown. Later, I will release the player ratings for the second game between Duke and VCU in advance of the final tomorrow. 

This year I am recapping games in a similar fashion that soccer matches are recapped. Following a game, each player receives a rating 1-10 based upon their performance. Over the course of time you can see how they are playing in stretches, and how the team overall is performing based upon the form of their players. I think this is an effective way to evaluate basketball games. Especially when, at the end of the season, it is not always the most talented team that wins, or the team that had the most victories during the season, but the team that is experiencing the greatest of run of form.

Wisconsin

F Ethan Happ: 7

Ethan Happ is a redshirt freshman. He is the tallest member of Wisconsin's starting lineup, listed at 6'9. He did an excellent job grabbing rebounds this game, doing so effectively against a tough, and physical Georgetown frontcourt. Happ ended the game with 11 rebounds, and six of them came on the offensive end. Unfortunately, despite getting many second chance opportunities, Happ struggled finishing around the basket. He shot only 3-8. Lucky for him, he took a couple trips to the line near the end of the game, and went a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe to boost his scoring number to 12 this game. Happ also finished the game with a pair of steals and a block.

F Nigel Hayes: 7.5

Nigel Hayes is the new star on this Badgers team now that Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker have left. He is a really good college player. He is versatile enough to score both on the inside, and on shoot outside. He can also defend on the perimeter, or in the post. His versatility made him an excellent third option behind the aforementioned forwards, but he has yet to transition to the elite level this season. Against Georgetown, Hayes led all players in scoring with 22 points. However, he did so on 7-17 shooting, 41.2%. That is actually one of his better scoring performances, because he is shooting 40.6% thus far this season. This would not be so bad, except Hayes shot 49.7% last year, and is only taking two more shots per game. Hayes is also down in 3pt%, 37.5 compared to 39.8% last year (although 37.5% for a 6'8 forward is nothing to scoff at), and FT%, 68.8 compared to 74.4. This is just to say Hayes is having trouble transitioning into a starring role. Hayes, and Wisconsin would be playing much better if Hayes could get his shooting numbers closer to last years level, while elevating the number of shots he takes.

Hayes struggled getting inside against the Hoyas. He had no problem getting past defenders outside, but once he got inside he missed a lot of shots near the basket, and also lost a couple balls while trying to get his shot up in traffic—he turned the ball over for the first three times this season during this game. This had a lot to do with Georgetown's excellent group of frontcourt players, and their solid interior defense. This also partially explains why Hayes was limited to only four rebounds, although three of which came on the offensive end.

Hayes once again showed he can play solid defense in this game. He does a good job guarding out on the perimeter, and is also solid defending the low post. He had two steals this game.

F Vitto Brown: 5

Brown is another versatile forward. He is 6'8, allowing him to guard either forward position, and likes to shoot jump shots on offense. Brown scored 9 points this game, but he did not shoot well. He was only 4-13 from the field, and 1-3 from 3pt range. He look a large number of jump shots against Georgetown. Brown has been dreadful from three thus far this season, shooting only 16.7% from there coming into the game. However, he has shot 46.7% from the field, and this is the first game in which he has failed to score in double digits. Brown was an asset grabbing rebounds, he had seven. Brown did foul out this game. However, he stayed in the game until the two minute mark despite picking up his fourth foul with seven to play.

G Zak Showalter: 5

Somehow 6'2 Zak Showalter is a pretty good rebounder. He averaged 5.3 coming into this game, and picked up another seven against the Hoyas, four of which came on the offensive end—that's all hustle. Although he helped out on the glass—or perhaps below the glass would be more apt, Showalter did not shoot great this game. He was 3-7 from the field, scoring seven points total. He was also one for three from 3pt range, which is in line with his 33.3% 3pt% this season. Showalter also turned the ball over three times, and fouled out of the game with six minutes left.

G Bronson Koenig: 3.5

Bronson Koenig found his stock to be very high following a strong performance in the tournament last season, and the departures of Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker. Koenig was touted as a potential all-conference performer, in a similar manner that Duke's Grayson Allen was. He, also like Allen, began the season with strong scoring performances. However, I do not think Koenig can be the second best player on a team that competes for a championship.

Against Georgetown, Koenig struggled mightily shooting. He was only 2-12 from the field, and made a single 3pt attempt of six. He scored nine points, four of which came from the free throw line. Koenig lacks vision as a point guard, and has trouble setting up teammates. He instead often looks first to shoot. This does benefit the team when Koenig is shooting well, but when he is not he struggles to help the offense in other ways.

F Khalil Iverson: 3

Iverson was the only bench player to receive significant minutes. He 21 due to the foul trouble Brown and Showalter were in much of the game. He showed a good ability to get up, and challenge Georgetown's bigs for rebounds, despite being only 6'5. However, he disappeared in the second half. He finished the game 1-3 shooting for two points, grabbing four rebounds, and also had two assists. He needed to be a more prominent presence when Brown or Showalter were sitting.

Team Rating: 5.05

Wisconsin could not come back to defeat Georgetown, and as a result pick up their second loss of the season. Koenig struggled shooting, which left Wisconsin without a number two option on offense. Nigel Hayes is a great college player, but he is not capable of carrying this team. It also did not help that Wisconsin's next best scorers, Showalter and Brown, were in foul trouble down the stretch, and Wisconsin lacks depth. Georgetown was a good measuring stick game for Wisconsin. They were both fringe top-25 teams coming into the season, in my opinion. It's now going to be interesting to see how they fare against Syracuse in a couple of weeks.

Georgetown

C Bradley Hayes: 2

Bradley Hayes had played well in Georgetown's first two games, averaging 30 minutes and 17.5 points. However, he sat on the bench for much of this game in favor of four-star freshman Jesse Govan who was playing excellently.

Hayes played only 14 minutes, shooting 2-6 for four points, and picking up two rebounds. Another reason he was likely benched for most of the game, and down the stretch, were his four turnovers. Four turnovers in 14 minutes will get you benched.

F Isaac Copeland: 8

With Smith-Rivera struggling, Copeland took over for Georgetown, especially in the second half. He shot 5-9, and 3-4 from beyond the arc, to score a season high 15 points. Copeland has been very consistent offensively thus far. He has scored 11, 13, and 15 in the Hoyas' first three games, and has shot over 50% both from the field, and from three point range. Copeland added eight rebounds. Although, he also turned the ball over four times. Copeland is a great asset for this team as a versatile forward who can guard multiple positions, and score from anyway. It was good to see he has the ability to lead on offense when needed as well.

F Marcus Dickerson: 3.5

Dickerson, like Hayes, saw limited time this game despite starting. He shot 0-2, and finished the game with zero points. He played seven minutes total, and finished with three rebounds and assists. Unlike Hayes, Dickerson did not turn the ball over excessively. He simply sat because Reggie Cameron was playing so effectively off the bench.

G LJ Peak: 4

LJ Peak only played 21 minutes this game. He took only five shots from the field, making two of them. He added another five points from the free throw line, bringing his point total up to nine points, which falls in line with his season average of 9.3. Peak has yet to make a 3pt FG this season, but had some mild success driving to the basket. Peak was a four-star recruit a year ago, but has yet to step up his sophomore season like he was expected to with Jabril Trawick gone.

G D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera: 5

Georgetown's expectations for this season grew last summer when Smith-Rivera decided to come back to school, after initially declaring for the draft. Thus far this year, Smith-Rivera's ppg, FG%, and 3pt% have all lowered compared to last year. He did not shoot well against Wisconsin. He went 2-9 from the field, and one for four from three. Smith-Rivera did end up with 12 points, but only because he took many FT at the end of the game; he finished 7-10 from the line. Smith-Rivera at least helps the team in multiple ways. He grabbed five rebounds, had four assists this game, to lead the team, and had three steals. Smith-Rivera also only turned the ball once despite playing more than 30 minutes. Smith-Rivera has down a good job with the ball in his hands at least this season. He has averaged 4.3 assists, and only averaged 1.0 turnovers.

C Jessie Govan: 7.5

Govan was Georgetown's highest rated recruit; he was a consensus top-50 player coming into the season. He is a skilled big man, and gives the team a unique look when he is on the court. Govan scored a career high, 13 points, against Wisconsin. He scores just as much from outside as he does inside. He made a three pointer, and shoots jumpers away from the basket consistently. He was 3-7 from the field, making one of his two three attempts. Govan is also an excellent FT shooter, making all six of his attempts. In addition to being a good shooter, Govan is a surprisingly effective passer. He ended this game with three assists. Because Govan is threat from outside, he draws defenders out, and that frees up the inside where he can pass the ball for a teammate to pick up an easy two points. In addition to being a skilled offensive player, Govan is a gifted low post defender. He played nice defense against Happ when he had the ball inside, and had three blocks in the game. Govan also grabbed five rebounds.

F Reggie Cameron: 6.5

Reggie Cameron exploded on offense in the first half. He sunk four three pointers, and scored a total of 14 points in the half. However, Cameron disappeared in the second half, and did not score another point. He finished the game 5-7 from the field. He also finished the game with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Cameron is an intriguing player for Georgetown, because if he can play like he did in the first half consistently, he will give Georgetown a second versatile forward who will stretch defenses even further. However, Cameron does not have a great track record. He has averaged seven points in eighteen minutes this season, and averaged only 1.2 points in 4.6 minutes last season as a sophomore. At worst though, Cameron is a live shooter off the bench who can contribute solid minutes.

G Kaleb Johnson: 3

Johnson was a third bench player to receive more than 20 minutes this game. He was not as effective as Cameron and Govan though. Johnson is a tall, 6'6, freshman guard. Due to his height he is able to help out grabbing rebounds; he has now grabbed three in back-to-back games. However, he is yet to show much on the offensive end. He made two of three field goals against Wisconsin for four points. He also fouled out late in the game, and turned the ball over three times. Georgetown they were better than their 0-2 record when they defeated Wisconsin, moving to 1-2. The continued success of standouts Copeland and Govan are essential to Georgetown this season. Copeland is a great second option who can stretch defenses. Govan is great on both ends of the floor, and has a much higher upside than Hayes. I would actually like to see Georgetown play big with Hayes, Govan, and Copeland all on the court at the same time. Smith-Rivera's struggles shooting are a concern; he needs to be the leader of this team. They could be very dangerous if he average 16+ points per game again. It will be very interesting to see what they can do against Duke tomorrow.
